Alex Maier
Adventure & Documentarian/Filmmaker – Wilderness Mindset
Alex Maier is an adventure filmmaker and documentarian whose work focuses on human stories shaped by wild and demanding environments. His personal and professional path into filmmaking has been guided by curiosity, endurance, and a deep connection to the outdoors—values that directly inform his immersive approach to expedition storytelling.
Alex’s filmmaking journey began as a teenager, creating snowboard films with friends. What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion for cameras and storytelling, expanding into year-round projects and experimental films that were ambitious, creative, and occasionally “so bad they were good.” This early hands-on experience laid the foundation for a lifelong career behind the camera.
He went on to earn a degree in Digital Cinema from Northern Michigan University, where he also discovered a love for hiking and camping in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. After graduation, determined to see if outdoor filmmaking could become a career, Alex hiked the 1,200-mile Pacific Northwest Trail while documenting the entire journey. That experience set him on a path he continues to follow today.
Since then, Alex has produced documentaries on the North Country Trail, the Hayduke Trail, and multiple expeditions on the Mississippi River. In 2019, he moved to Montana in search of bigger terrain to film—and soon after, met his future wife, Amy. Together, they hiked the Continental Divide Trail and officially launched Wilderness Mindset, transitioning their work from passion projects into a full-scale documentary production company.
For Mississippi Speed Record: An Epic Adventure, Alex served alongside Amy as a documentarian and provided expedition support when needed, helping capture the story of the record-breaking attempt as it unfolded. With two Mississippi River documentaries behind them, Alex is excited to return with the team to document the next chapter of this journey on the Missouri River under Wilderness Mindset.
