Ed Wagner - Back-up Paddler

I am Ed Wagner, a passionate canoeist with over 40 years of experience in the sport. My journey began when I participated in a local triathlon that included canoeing in place of swimming. After recently retiring in 2023 from my role as Athletic Director and Professor Emeritus at Cayuga Community College in Auburn, NY, I now have more time to indulge in my love for adventure on the water.

One of my most significant accomplishments is completing the 2024 Texas Water Safari, a challenging 240-mile race, where I and my teammates placed 25th overall with a time of 61 hours and 31 minutes. Despite the challenges—including navigating past alligators, water moccasins, and steers—I found joy in the experience, often aided by the amusing hallucinations that come with endurance racing.

I also completed the 2025 Suwannee River Race, covering 230 miles. Paddling along Michigan’s Ausable River is one of my favorite experiences, where I’ve participated in the 120-mile marathon four times. The breathtaking scenery of the Adirondacks during the fall has drawn me to the NY Adirondack 90 Miler, which I've completed 15 times, stretching from Old Forge to Saranac Lake.

In the spring, I eagerly look forward to the 70-mile General Clinton Canoe Classic from Cooperstown to Bainbridge on the Susquehanna River, an event I’ve had the pleasure of completing 11 times.

As I gear up for my next adventure, I’m excited to be an alternate for an upcoming race along the Missouri River. Although I hope not to be called upon, I would cherish the opportunity to contribute and complete this iconic route in record time. Paddling has given me more than just a sport; it has provided me with countless memories and experiences that I treasure deeply.
